An immigration paralegal works with attorneys to help immigrants become citizens. While a paralegal can’t provide legal advice, they work closely with an immigration attorney to assist people with citizenship immigration issues, political asylum, and other types of immigration visas. The paralegal needs to do a full review of the case with the information available and be aware of the case strategy and possible issues it might have. They need to catch possible changes in strategy or what information can be problematic to the case.
Paralegal responsibilities include managing caseload intakes, filing visa applications for permanent residency, and preparing nonimmigrant and immigrant visa petition packages for attorney review. Immigration paralegals often communicate directly with clients, which makes the ability to speak one or more languages vital to this position. This role requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of immigration processes and documentation.
